Working with the African Union

PROGRAM

Working with the African Union

The African Union has been very instrumental in promoting social protection as a poverty reduction strategy in the continent. This effort has seen many countries in Africa develop and fund programmes in social protection. The Africa Platform for Social Protection engages with the Africa Union through the African Union Commission on Human and Peoples Rights as well as the Department of Social Affairs to influence social protection policy and programming.  APSP is a member of the steering Committee on Labour, Employment and Social protection. Through this structure, APSP contributes and provides technical support in generating content for policies and frameworks. APSP is also a member of the Africa Commission Working group on the Rights of Older Persons and People with Disabilities. This is a special mechanism overseen by the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights. The Working Group conducts research and supports the development of legal guidelines that protect and promote the human rights of older persons and persons with disabilities. Some of the achievements of the working group include the drafting and advocacy for the adoption on the protocol on the Rights of older persons and the protocol on Rights of Persons with disabilities.
